Copy the template below, fill the bracketed fields, and attach a photo of the mailer if you have one.If sending your opt-out request by email, use this helpful template for Washington State University:
Hello, I'm writing to request that Washington State University permanently remove my address from all direct mail lists, including your internal house list and any rented or third-party lists used to source your mailings. The name and address to remove as they appear on a recently delivered unwanted mailer: [NAME] [ADDRESS] [CITY ST ZIP] A few notes for your direct mail team: • I have never subscribed to marketing communications from Washington State University. • Since I haven't opted in with you directly, the source is most likely a rented or co-op list. Please also flag this address with your list partners so it's suppressed at the source. Please confirm in writing once the suppression is complete. I've attached an image of the mailer for reference. Thank you, [NAME]
Replace the bracketed fields ([NAME], [ADDRESS], [CITY ST ZIP]) before sending. Attach a photo of the mailer if you have one, and keep the reply for your records.

What to Expect After Opting Out
- Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. An appeal already labeled can still arrive.
- Bills are separate. Stopping promotional mail does not stop a tuition bill, transcript, or other student account mail.
- A later gift can start it again. A later donation can put the address back on a file.
Why Do You Receive Washington State University Mail?
Washington State University is a public research university. The Pullman campus opened in 1890 and is still the oldest and largest of six campuses, with colleges in Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, Everett, and Global Campus. They run Extension offices in all 39 Washington counties and on the Colville Reservation, plus more than 200 undergraduate fields. For more than 130 years they have framed the work as serving the public good. Carnegie lists very high research spending and doctorate production. The leftover mail is an alumni or fundraising appeal, not a tuition bill.
You get that mail if you studied there, applied, gave, or landed on a Cougar file. A later gift can put the address back on. The leftover packet is often a crimson ask after you already left Pullman.
How to Prevent General Junk Mail Proactively
-
DMAchoice
DMAchoice is the Association of National Advertisers' mail preference service. An $8 registration asks about 1,100 participating national companies to suppress your address from prospect promotional mail for 10 years. It does not cover local mailers, charity appeals, companies you already buy from, or occupant / current-resident saturation mail. Allow 90 days or longer.
NOTE: DMAchoice will not stop mail from Washington State University as it is not an active member of the ANA.
-

Your Data Privacy Rights (CCPA & Beyond)
A promotional opt-out stops Washington State University marketing mail. It does not always stop the underlying address from being shared. If you live in a state with an active consumer privacy law (California’s CCPA and several others), you can request access to or deletion of your personal information, and you can opt out of sale, share, or targeted advertising.
Go to the WSU Foundation Privacy Policy page, or call +1-800-448-2978, and ask for a deletion or do-not-share request, and to opt out of promotional mail.
Frequently asked questions

Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. If an appeal arrives during that window, it was likely already printed and labeled before your request was processed. Tuition bills and student account mail can still arrive.
How do I stop Washington State University mail for a previous resident?
Call Washington State University at +1-800-448-2978 and include that person’s name and this address, or use the PaperKarma app to scan the mailer, mark the recipient as a previous resident, and submit the opt-out. Do not mark the person as deceased unless they are deceased.
Will Washington State University mail stop if I move?
Not automatically. Marketing lists are tied to a specific name and address. A USPS forward can send a few more packets to the new address. Call again for the new address, or use the PaperKarma app there.
