Current opt-out methods for United Way mail

  1. PaperKarma app

Photograph the United Way appeal. PaperKarma files the opt-out for you.

Once you opt out of this sender, you can opt out of 100,000+ other mailers in the same app.

  2. Phone

Call United Way at +1-703-836-7112. Ask them to stop fundraising mail. Say if the mailer is from United Way Worldwide or from a local United Way.

A phone request can take 5 to 10 minutes or longer, depending on the phone tree, hold time, and whether they offer a callback.

What to Expect After Opting Out

  • Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. An appeal already labeled can still arrive.
  • A local United Way can keep its own file. A national request may not stop a local list.
  • Receipts are separate. Stopping promotional mail does not stop a pledge reminder they treat as account mail.

Why Do You Receive United Way Mail?

United Way began in Denver on October 16, 1887, when a woman, a priest, two ministers, and a rabbi formed the Charity Organization Society: one cooperative campaign for more than 20 local health and welfare groups. That first drive raised $21,700. The work later ran as Community Chest and United Fund. The United Way name landed in 1970. United Way Worldwide is the national umbrella. Local United Ways still run their own appeals for health, youth opportunity, and financial security.

You get that mail if you gave, sat on a workplace campaign, or landed on a rented or exchanged list. A national request may not stop a local United Way that still has the name.

How to Prevent General Junk Mail Proactively

  1. DMAchoice

DMAchoice is the Association of National Advertisers' mail preference service. An $8 registration asks about 1,100 participating national companies to suppress your address from prospect promotional mail for 10 years. It does not cover local mailers, charity appeals, companies you already buy from, or occupant / current-resident saturation mail. Allow 90 days or longer.

NOTE: DMAchoice will not stop mail from United Way as it is not an active member of the ANA.

  2. OptOutPrescreen

OptOutPrescreen is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry site. It lets you opt out of firm offers of credit and insurance for 5 years or permanently.

NOTE: OptOutPrescreen will not opt you out of United Way mail. It only covers prescreened credit card and insurance offers.

  3. PaperKarma

For local and regional mailers, coupon packs, charity donation requests, and the large share of junk mail that DMAchoice does not cover, the PaperKarma app has the largest U.S. registry, with over 100,000 mailers on file.

Your Data Privacy Rights (CCPA & Beyond)

A promotional opt-out stops United Way marketing mail. It does not always stop the underlying address from being shared. If you live in a state with an active consumer privacy law (California’s CCPA and several others), you can request access to or deletion of your personal information, and you can opt out of sale, share, or targeted advertising.

Call +1-703-836-7112 and ask for a deletion or do-not-share request, and to opt out of fundraising mail. Name the local United Way on the mailer if it is not Worldwide.

Frequently asked questions

How long until United Way mail stops?

Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. If an appeal arrives during that window, it was likely already printed and labeled before your request was processed. A different local United Way can still mail if that file was not named.

How do I stop United Way mail for a previous resident?

Call United Way at +1-703-836-7112 and include that person’s name and this address, or use the PaperKarma app to scan the mailer, mark the recipient as a previous resident, and submit the opt-out. Do not mark the person as deceased unless they are deceased.

Will United Way mail stop if I move?

Not automatically. Marketing lists are tied to a specific name and address. A USPS forward can send a few more packets to the new address. Call again for the new address, or use the PaperKarma app there.
