Current opt-out methods for True Value mail

  1. Email request

Use the Email option on this page and ask True Value to stop promotional postal mail. Include the full name and mailing address you want removed. Copy the template below, fill the bracketed fields, and attach a photo of the mailer if you have one.

If sending your opt-out request by email, use this helpful template for True Value:

    Hello,

I'm writing to request that True Value permanently remove my address from all direct mail lists, including your internal house list and any rented or third-party lists used to source your mailings.

The name and address to remove as they appear on a recently delivered unwanted mailer:

    [NAME]
    [ADDRESS]
    [CITY ST ZIP]

A few notes for your direct mail team:

    • I have never subscribed to marketing communications from True Value.
    • Since I haven't opted in with you directly, the source is most likely a rented or co-op list. Please also flag this address with your list partners so it's suppressed at the source.

Please confirm in writing once the suppression is complete. I've attached an image of the mailer for reference.

    Thank you,
    [NAME]

Replace the bracketed fields ([NAME], [ADDRESS], [CITY ST ZIP]) before sending. Attach a photo of the mailer if you have one, and keep the reply for your records.

  2. Privacy Choices form

Open True Value's Privacy Choices form and submit an opt-out request. You will need one of: a True Value Rewards number, the phone number on your account, or your street address and ZIP code so they can locate your record.
  3. PaperKarma app

Photograph the True Value circular. PaperKarma files the opt-out for you.

Once you opt out of this sender, you can opt out of 100,000+ other mailers in the same app.

  4. Phone

Call True Value at +1-800-897-3112. Ask them to stop promotional mail and circulars for the name and address on the mailer. Say if a local store name is on the mailer.

A phone request can take 5 to 10 minutes or longer, depending on the phone tree, hold time, and whether they offer a callback.

What to Expect After Opting Out

  • Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. A circular already labeled can still arrive.
  • Orders are separate. Stopping promotional mail does not stop a shipment, Rewards notice, or store receipt.
  • A local store can keep its own file. An independently owned True Value that mailed you may need its own request.

Why Do You Receive True Value Mail?

True Value is a hardware cooperative under Do it Best Corp. John Cotter founded Cotter & Company in 1948 with 25 independent stores. In 1963 Cotter bought Hibbard, Spencer, and Bartlett and the True Value trademark. In November 2024 Do it Best acquired True Value and folded it into a cooperative that supports more than 8,000 stores worldwide. Independent True Value stores still set their own marketing. A purchase or Rewards signup can put you on promotional mailings from Do it Best or from the local store. The leftover mail is a circular or a store offer, not a receipt for paint you already bought.

You get that mail if you shopped a store, joined True Value Rewards, or landed on a list they mail. A store that mailed you may keep its own file after a network request.

How to Prevent General Junk Mail Proactively

  1. DMAchoice

DMAchoice is the Association of National Advertisers' mail preference service. An $8 registration asks about 1,100 participating national companies to suppress your address from prospect promotional mail for 10 years. It does not cover local mailers, charity appeals, companies you already buy from, or occupant / current-resident saturation mail. Allow 90 days or longer.

NOTE: DMAchoice will not stop mail from True Value as it is not an active member of the ANA.

  2. OptOutPrescreen

OptOutPrescreen is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry site. It lets you opt out of firm offers of credit and insurance for 5 years or permanently.

NOTE: OptOutPrescreen will not opt you out of True Value mail. It only covers prescreened credit card and insurance offers.

  3. PaperKarma

For local and regional mailers, coupon packs, charity donation requests, and the large share of junk mail that DMAchoice does not cover, the PaperKarma app has the largest U.S. registry, with over 100,000 mailers on file.

Your Data Privacy Rights (CCPA & Beyond)

A promotional opt-out stops True Value marketing mail. It does not always stop the underlying address from being shared. If you live in a state with an active consumer privacy law (California’s CCPA and several others), you can request access to or deletion of your personal information, and you can opt out of sale, share, or targeted advertising.

Go to the Privacy Policy page, or call +1-800-897-3112, and ask for a deletion or do-not-share request, and to opt out of promotional mail.

Frequently asked questions

How long until True Value mail stops?

Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. If a circular arrives during that window, it was likely already printed and labeled before your request was processed. A local store can still mail if that file was not named.

How do I stop True Value mail for a previous resident?

Call True Value at +1-800-897-3112 and include that person’s name and this address, or use the PaperKarma app to scan the mailer, mark the recipient as a previous resident, and submit the opt-out. Do not mark the person as deceased unless they are deceased.

Will True Value mail stop if I move?

Not automatically. Marketing lists are tied to a specific name and address. A USPS forward can send a few more packets to the new address. Call again for the new address, or use the PaperKarma app there.
