Current opt-out methods for Southern Living mail

  1. Email request

Use the Email option on this page and ask Southern Living to stop promotional postal mail. Include the full name and mailing address you want removed. Copy the template below, fill the bracketed fields, and attach a photo of the mailer if you have one.

If sending your opt-out request by email, use this helpful template for Southern Living:

    Hello,

I'm writing to request that Southern Living permanently remove my address from all direct mail lists, including your internal house list and any rented or third-party lists used to source your mailings.

The name and address to remove as they appear on a recently delivered unwanted mailer:

    [NAME]
    [ADDRESS]
    [CITY ST ZIP]

A few notes for your direct mail team:

    • I have never subscribed to marketing communications from Southern Living.
    • Since I haven't opted in with you directly, the source is most likely a rented or co-op list. Please also flag this address with your list partners so it's suppressed at the source.

Please confirm in writing once the suppression is complete. I've attached an image of the mailer for reference.

    Thank you,
    [NAME]

Replace the bracketed fields ([NAME], [ADDRESS], [CITY ST ZIP]) before sending. Attach a photo of the mailer if you have one, and keep the reply for your records.

  2. PaperKarma app

Photograph the Southern Living magazine. PaperKarma files the opt-out for you.

Once you opt out of this sender, you can opt out of 100,000+ other mailers in the same app.

  3. Phone

Call Southern Living at +1-800-272-4101. Ask Southern Living / People Inc. to stop sending you promotional magazine mail.

A phone request can take 5 to 10 minutes or longer, depending on the phone tree, hold time, and whether they offer a callback.

What to Expect After Opting Out

  • Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. A magazine already labeled can still arrive.
  • Renewal notices can still arrive. People Inc. still sends renewal notices after a promotional opt-out if you subscribe.
  • A later list add-back can start it again. A later gift or list rental can put the address back on a circulation file.

Why Do You Receive Southern Living Mail?

Southern Living is People Inc.’s Southern food, home, and travel magazine. The first issue was February 1966, launched by The Progressive Farmer Company as the Magazine of the Modern South. People Inc. sells or rents postal names. The mail you see is this title plus other magazines and products on that circulation list.

You get that mail if you subscribe, got a gift, or landed on a list they mail or rent. The leftover issue is often a renewal or a sister-title pitch after you already stopped reading.

How to Prevent General Junk Mail Proactively

  1. DMAchoice

DMAchoice is the Association of National Advertisers' mail preference service. An $8 registration asks about 1,100 participating national companies to suppress your address from prospect promotional mail for 10 years. It does not cover local mailers, charity appeals, companies you already buy from, or occupant / current-resident saturation mail. Allow 90 days or longer.

NOTE: DMAchoice will not stop mail from Southern Living as it is not an active member of the ANA.

  2. OptOutPrescreen

OptOutPrescreen is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry site. It lets you opt out of firm offers of credit and insurance for 5 years or permanently.

NOTE: OptOutPrescreen will not opt you out of Southern Living mail. It only covers prescreened credit card and insurance offers.

  3. PaperKarma

For local and regional mailers, coupon packs, charity donation requests, and the large share of junk mail that DMAchoice does not cover, the PaperKarma app has the largest U.S. registry, with over 100,000 mailers on file.

Your Data Privacy Rights (CCPA & Beyond)

A promotional opt-out stops Southern Living marketing mail. It does not always stop the underlying address from being shared. If you live in a state with an active consumer privacy law (California’s CCPA and several others), you can request access to or deletion of your personal information, and you can opt out of sale, share, or targeted advertising.

Call +1-800-272-4101 and ask for a deletion or do-not-share request, and to opt out of promotional magazine mail.

Frequently asked questions

How long until Southern Living mail stops?

Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. If a magazine arrives during that window, it was likely already printed and labeled before your request was processed. Renewal notices for a magazine you still subscribe to can still arrive.

How do I stop Southern Living mail for a previous resident?

Call Southern Living at +1-800-272-4101 and include that person’s name and this address, or use the PaperKarma app to scan the mailer, mark the recipient as a previous resident, and submit the opt-out. Do not mark the person as deceased unless they are deceased.

Will Southern Living mail stop if I move?

Not automatically. Marketing lists are tied to a specific name and address. A USPS forward can send a few more packets to the new address. Call again for the new address, or use the PaperKarma app there.
