Email request
Use the Email option on this page and ask Paws of Honor to stop promotional postal mail. Include the full name and mailing address you want removed. Copy the template below, fill the bracketed fields, and attach a photo of the mailer if you have one.
If sending your opt-out request by email, use this helpful template for Paws of Honor:
Hello, I'm writing to request that Paws of Honor permanently remove my address from all direct mail lists, including your internal house list and any rented or third-party lists used to source your mailings. The name and address to remove as they appear on a recently delivered unwanted mailer: [NAME] [ADDRESS] [CITY ST ZIP] A few notes for your direct mail team: • I have never subscribed to marketing communications from Paws of Honor. • Since I haven't opted in with you directly, the source is most likely a rented or co-op list. Please also flag this address with your list partners so it's suppressed at the source. Please confirm in writing once the suppression is complete. I've attached an image of the mailer for reference. Thank you, [NAME]
Replace the bracketed fields ([NAME], [ADDRESS], [CITY ST ZIP]) before sending. Attach a photo of the mailer if you have one, and keep the reply for your records.

Phone
Call Paws of Honor at +1-703-403-8281. Ask them to stop fundraising mail for the name and address on the mailer.
A phone request can take 5 to 10 minutes or longer, depending on the phone tree, hold time, and whether they offer a callback.
What to Expect After Opting Out
- Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. An appeal already labeled can still arrive.
- Receipts are separate. Stopping fundraising mail does not stop a donor receipt if you gave.
- A later list add-back can start it again. A later gift can put the address back on a file.
Why Do You Receive Paws of Honor Mail?
Paws of Honor pays veterinary bills and supplies for retired military and law enforcement K9s. Founder Bob Youngblood, then director of Old Dominion Animal Health Center, treated Pentagon protection dogs after the September 11, 2001 attack. He found that once those dogs retire, often around age 10, they are treated as equipment and lose care. The group started in 2015. They now work with 573 clinics in 44 states and list more than 1,100 dogs enrolled. A handler can face $10,000 or more in late-life vet bills. The leftover mail is a fundraising appeal, not a clinic invoice.
You get that mail if you donated, signed up for updates, or landed on a list they mail. The leftover appeal is often an ask for a dog already covered.
How to Prevent General Junk Mail Proactively
-
DMAchoice
DMAchoice is the Association of National Advertisers' mail preference service. An $8 registration asks about 1,100 participating national companies to suppress your address from prospect promotional mail for 10 years. It does not cover local mailers, charity appeals, companies you already buy from, or occupant / current-resident saturation mail. Allow 90 days or longer.
NOTE: DMAchoice will not stop mail from Paws of Honor as it is not an active member of the ANA.
-
OptOutPrescreen
OptOutPrescreen is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry site. It lets you opt out of firm offers of credit and insurance for 5 years or permanently.
NOTE: OptOutPrescreen will not opt you out of Paws of Honor mail. It only covers prescreened credit card and insurance offers.
-
PaperKarma
For local and regional mailers, coupon packs, charity donation requests, and the large share of junk mail that DMAchoice does not cover, the PaperKarma app has the largest U.S. registry, with over 100,000 mailers on file.
Your Data Privacy Rights (CCPA & Beyond)
A promotional opt-out stops Paws of Honor marketing mail. It does not always stop the underlying address from being shared. If you live in a state with an active consumer privacy law (California’s CCPA and several others), you can request access to or deletion of your personal information, and you can opt out of sale, share, or targeted advertising.
Go to the Contact page, or call +1-703-403-8281, and ask for a deletion or do-not-share request, and to opt out of fundraising mail.
Frequently asked questions
How long until Paws of Honor mail stops?
Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Print runs are scheduled in advance. If an appeal arrives during that window, it was likely already printed and labeled before your request was processed. Donor receipts can still arrive if you gave.
How do I stop Paws of Honor mail for a previous resident?
Call Paws of Honor at +1-703-403-8281 and include that person’s name and this address, or use the PaperKarma app to scan the mailer, mark the recipient as a previous resident, and submit the opt-out. Do not mark the person as deceased unless they are deceased.
Will Paws of Honor mail stop if I move?
Not automatically. Marketing lists are tied to a specific name and address. A USPS forward can send a few more packets to the new address. Call again for the new address, or use the PaperKarma app there.
